Key Features of the Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM Lens
1. Macro Capabilities with 0.5x Magnification
One of the most standout features of the
Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM Lens is its
macro performance. With a
minimum focusing distance of 0.35m (about 13.8 inches), this lens offers
0.5x magnification, which is ideal for capturing intricate details of small objects like plants, insects, or textures. The ability to focus so closely while maintaining high image quality allows you to explore creative possibilities in
macro photography. Whether you're capturing tiny flowers or detailed textures, this lens offers fantastic results.
2. Bright f/2 Maximum Aperture
The
f/2 maximum aperture of the
Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM lens provides excellent control over
depth of field, allowing you to achieve stunning
subject isolation and
creamy background bokeh. This aperture is especially beneficial in
low-light situations, enabling faster shutter speeds for handheld shots. The wide aperture also gives you the ability to create beautiful, soft backgrounds, making the subject pop and helping to create visually striking compositions.
Superior Image Quality and Stabilization
1. Super Spectra Coating for Enhanced Clarity
To improve optical performance, the
Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM lens features
Super Spectra coatings, which help reduce
flare and
ghosting. This enhances
contrast and
color accuracy, especially in challenging lighting situations such as backlit scenes or bright environments. Whether you're shooting in natural sunlight or artificial light, the lens ensures your images are clear, sharp, and vibrant, with minimized optical artifacts.
2. Optical Image Stabilization for Sharp Handheld Shots
The
integrated Optical Image Stabilizer (IS) in the
RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM lens compensates for up to
5 stops of camera shake, allowing you to take sharper images at slower shutter speeds. This feature is particularly useful for handheld
macro photography where small movements can lead to blurring. When paired with the
Canon EOS R5 camera, the
IS system provides an impressive
up to 8 stops of stabilization, making handheld shots even more stable in
low-light conditions or when shooting
macro subjects in challenging environments.
3. Full-Time Manual Focus Override
The
STM motor in this lens ensures smooth, fast, and quiet autofocus, making it ideal for both
photo and
video applications. Additionally, the
full-time manual focus override feature allows you to manually adjust focus without needing to switch off autofocus. This adds a layer of precision and control, particularly when shooting close-ups or in macro photography, where fine-tuning focus is crucial to achieving the desired result.
Creative Possibilities with the Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM Lens
1. Gorgeous, Creamy Bokeh
Thanks to its
medium telephoto focal length and
9-blade circular aperture, the
RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM lens produces a
beautiful, creamy bokeh that helps separate your subject from the background. This makes it an excellent lens for creating
portrait-style shots where you want the subject to stand out. Whether you’re shooting people, flowers, or products, the soft out-of-focus areas enhance the visual appeal and draw attention to the sharp subject in the foreground.
2. Versatile for Portraits and Macro
While this lens excels in
macro photography, its
85mm focal length also makes it a superb option for
portraiture. The moderate telephoto reach allows for flattering subject compression, making it ideal for shooting people and portraits with a natural look. Coupled with the
f/2 aperture, the lens provides the necessary background blur and subject isolation, ensuring that your portraits stand out with professional-quality results.
Convenient Control Features
1. Adjustable Control Ring
The
Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM lens comes equipped with a
control ring that allows you to adjust key exposure settings directly from the lens. This ring provides convenient, tactile control over
ISO,
aperture,
exposure compensation, and more. This intuitive feature is particularly useful for photographers who prefer making quick adjustments while shooting, without having to navigate through camera menus.
2. Lightweight and Portable Design
Despite its powerful capabilities, the
Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM lens is surprisingly
compact and
lightweight, making it an excellent choice for photographers on the go. Its small size makes it easy to carry for long shooting sessions, whether you’re photographing small subjects for macro work or taking portraits on location.

The
Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM Lens offers exceptional
macro and
portrait photography capabilities, coupled with
superior image quality and
convenient features. Whether you're capturing small, intricate details with its
0.5x magnification, creating
