Key Features of the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Prime Lens
1. 85mm Focal Length
The
85mm focal length of this lens makes it an excellent choice for
portrait photography, offering a flattering perspective with slight compression that enhances the subject's features. The
short-telephoto design allows for a comfortable working distance between the photographer and the subject, ideal for capturing expressive portraits with natural proportions. It also provides a pleasant background blur, ensuring the subject stands out clearly in the frame.
2. Wide f/1.8 Maximum Aperture
One of the standout features of the
Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Prime Lens is its
f/1.8 maximum aperture, which provides several benefits. This wide aperture allows you to shoot in low-light environments while maintaining fast shutter speeds, making it perfect for indoor events or evening portraits. The
wide aperture also offers significant
control over depth of field, allowing you to create beautiful
bokeh and effectively isolate your subject from the background.
3. Beautiful Background Bokeh
The
f/1.8 aperture, combined with
8 rounded diaphragm blades, creates smooth and pleasing
background blur (bokeh). This is ideal for portraits or any situation where you want to emphasize the subject while maintaining a soft and out-of-focus background. Whether you're shooting a person, flower, or any other subject, this lens excels at achieving that professional, artistic look with beautiful subject isolation.
Superior Optical Performance
1. Super Spectra Coating
To enhance optical performance, the
Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Prime Lens is equipped with
Super Spectra coatings. These coatings help reduce
ghosting,
flare, and
chromatic aberration, particularly when shooting in strong lighting conditions. This results in improved
contrast,
color accuracy, and
neutrality, ensuring your photos are sharp and vibrant even in challenging light.
2. Lens Construction and Design
The
Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Prime Lens features a robust
9-element construction in
7 groups. The lens is designed to deliver
high optical performance across the entire frame, ensuring sharpness and clarity. The
28° 30' viewing angle ensures that the lens is well-suited for portrait, event, and
close-up photography with excellent overall image quality.
Fast and Accurate Autofocus
1. Ultrasonic Motor (USM) for Quiet, Fast Autofocus
The
Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Prime Lens is equipped with an
Ultrasonic Motor (USM), which provides
fast,
quiet, and
precise autofocus performance. This makes the lens ideal for a variety of photography situations, including
portraiture,
events, and even
videography. The
USM ensures that autofocus is nearly silent, a feature particularly beneficial when recording videos or capturing candid moments without drawing attention.
2. Full-Time Manual Focus Override
The
full-time manual focus override feature allows photographers to make precise adjustments to the focus even when the autofocus system is engaged. This is particularly useful when working with shallow depth of field, where small adjustments can make a big difference in achieving the perfect shot. Whether you're shooting portraits or capturing quick moving subjects, the full-time manual focus gives you more control and flexibility.
Versatility for Multiple Photography Applications
1. Perfect for Portraits
With its
85mm focal length and
f/1.8 aperture, this lens is a prime choice for
portrait photographers. The slightly compressed perspective provided by the
85mm focal length creates flattering and natural-looking portraits, while the
shallow depth of field allows the subject to pop against a beautifully blurred background. Whether you're shooting headshots, half-body portraits, or full-body shots, the
Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Prime Lens is versatile enough for a variety of portrait styles.
2. Close-Up Photography
In addition to its portrait capabilities, the
Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Prime Lens is also effective for
close-up photography, thanks to its
85cm (2.79 feet) minimum focusing distance. This allows you to capture detailed shots of subjects such as jewelry, flowers, or other small objects with impressive sharpness and clarity. The
maximum magnification ratio of 0.13x ensures that you can get up close to your subject and capture intricate details.
Lightweight and Portable Design
1. Compact and Lightweight
Weighing just
15 ounces (425 grams), the
Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Prime Lens is relatively lightweight for a short-telephoto lens. This makes it a convenient and portable option for photographers who need a
high-quality lens that won't weigh them down during long shooting sessions or on-location shoots. Whether you're traveling, attending events, or shooting portraits, the
